Understand the finish
These plain-English definitions are deliberately general. Final suitability, preparation and application must come from the current product label and technical data sheet.
Enhance the timber grain with a natural-looking penetrating finish.
Add colour while retaining a visible relationship with the timber beneath.
Combine penetrating oils and waxes for repairable interior protection.
Colour and protect timber; transparency and protection vary by product.
Colour the timber itself and normally require a compatible protective topcoat.
Build a protective film in a chosen sheen; suitability varies by product.
Film-forming protection where the selected product and substrate are compatible.
Systems developed for weather exposure, timber movement and maintenance.
Create a painted appearance while concealing most of the grain.
Products specifically intended for horizontal exterior timber and foot traffic.
Preparation products used only where the manufacturer specifies them.
Isolate resinous knots to help reduce staining through compatible coatings.
Repair holes and surface defects before sanding and finishing.
Multi-component repair systems for deeper or specialist timber repairs.
Clean, refresh and maintain a compatible existing finish.

Exterior wood systems
New, previously painted, stained, weathered, resinous or damaged timber can require different preparation. Never merge stages from unrelated manufacturer systems.
Identify timber, moisture, exposure, soundness and the existing finish.
Clean, remove failed coatings, repair defects and treat knots only as specified.
Use the manufacturer’s preservative primer, primer or undercoat where required.
Apply the compatible translucent or opaque topcoat at the specified film build.
Inspect exposed timber and recoat before the protective system fails.
Weathershield products are system components. Bare wood can require Preservative Primer+, followed by the appropriate flexible or quick-dry undercoat and compatible satin or gloss topcoat. The correct route depends on the chosen system and current manufacturer specification.

Surface filling, deep repairs, spliced timber and resin systems are not interchangeable. Extensive decay may require a joiner or specialist contractor.
Fine or general-purpose fillers for sound timber, nail holes and shallow defects.
Product-specific two-part fillers where the manufacturer allows deeper filling.
Remove unsound material, assess remaining structure and follow a complete repair specification.
Timbabuild-style systems require compatible stabiliser or primer, resin, correct dispensing equipment, mixing nozzles and finishing tools.
Decking & garden timber
Decking oils, stains, anti-slip finishes, cleaners and restorers have different maintenance needs. Do not use a vertical-only exterior finish on decking unless its manufacturer explicitly allows it.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Penetrating oil | Natural to coloured | Usually visible | Furniture, joinery; varies by product | Varies by product | Often locally maintainable | Varies |
| Hardwax oil | Low sheen to satin | Visible | Floors, furniture, worktops where specified | Wear and spill resistance varies | Often repairable in local areas | Product-specific |
| Varnish / polyurethane | Film-forming | Visible through clear films | Interior timber; exterior only where specified | Varies by resin and system | May require sanding before recoating | Product-specific |
| Translucent stain | Coloured, grain visible | Visible | Exterior or interior by product | Varies by system and exposure | Maintenance before film failure | Often |
| Opaque coating | Painted appearance | Mostly concealed | Doors, windows, cladding, furniture | System-dependent | Prepare and recoat as specified | Often |
