A question we hear
Which primer do I need for this wall, timber, metal or previously painted surface?
Primer selection follows diagnosis. Identify the substrate, contamination, porosity, defects and existing coating, then choose a compatible preparation and topcoat system using current technical data.
Plain-language definitions
Terms used in this guide
- Primer
- A preparatory coating selected to support adhesion, sealing or another defined substrate need.
- Substrate
- The existing material or coated surface receiving the new decorating system.
Technical facts
What can be verified
Product codes, dimensions, approved substrates, finish descriptions and application instructions should be checked against the current manufacturer label or technical data.
Professional judgement
What remains a recommendation
Colour relationships, atmosphere, visual balance and the order in which options are shortlisted are informed recommendations. They still need to be tested in the actual room or project.
Identify before abrading
Establish what the surface and existing coating are, whether they are sound, and whether moisture, staining or adhesion failure is present.
Solve the actual defect
A sealer, stain blocker, bonding primer and timber primer perform different jobs. One product should not be assumed to solve every condition.
Keep the system compatible
Follow preparation, drying, recoating and topcoat instructions from current labels and technical data. Test an uncertain existing coating before broad application.
