A question we hear
Which designer paint brand is best, and can I compare colours across brands?
There is no single best brand for every surface. Compare the colour range alongside the available finish, specification, application method and project constraints.
Plain-language definitions
Terms used in this guide

- Colour reference
- A manufacturer’s identifying code for a named colour record.
Technical facts
What can be verified
Product codes, dimensions, approved substrates, finish descriptions and application instructions should be checked against the current manufacturer label or technical data.
Professional judgement
What remains a recommendation
Colour relationships, atmosphere, visual balance and the order in which options are shortlisted are informed recommendations. They still need to be tested in the actual room or project.
Compare like with like
A wall emulsion and a specialist trim coating solve different problems. Start with the required performance and approved substrate, then compare brands that provide a suitable system.
Treat colour names carefully
Similar names and digital swatches do not establish equivalence. Compare reference codes, undertone and physical samples in the required finishes.
Plan the whole specification
Consider primer, number of coats, drying and curing, pack sizes and future maintenance before deciding from headline coverage alone.
