Painting the Outside

Exterior decoration can be complicated in some ways, especially in choosing the correct type of paint. A lot of paints are labelled as being for interior and exterior use but do not have the durability on external surfaces under British weather conditions. It is important that you use products specifically designed to weather the storm.

For walls outside, I suggest Dulux Trade Weathershield Smooth Masonry Paint, which is available in almost all Dulux colours, and is very long-lasting. Normally exterior surfaces are rough, so you you should use a long-pile 9 inch roller. If the surface is extremely rough or uneven use a sheepskin roller.

If you want to paint the woodwork outside, you're going to need three different products. First, use a primer (Dulux Trade Weathershield Preservative Primer), then an undercoat (Dulux Weathershield Undercoat), and finally either a satin or gloss topcoat depending on the level of shine you want (Dulux Trade Weathershield Gloss, Dulux Trade Weathershield Satin Finish). Again, this product is available in all Dulux Heritage Colours.

If you are seeking to replenish the look of brickwork, then use Brick and Tile Paint.
