I have found that people are often confused when it comes to choosing a colour for the woodwork. White is not a bad idea, and often works well because it harmonises with virtually any colour, but it may be more interesting to use one of the colour combination methods.
When it comes to the doors, if we are using a mono-chromatic colour scheme it can be a good idea to use a very pale shade of the hue being used throughout the room.
For the skirting, you could use the same colour throughout the house in order to bring the separate rooms of the house together. Choose a neutral colour that harmonises with the colours in all rooms, and this can look truly excellent. However, you must bear in mind that neutral colours are hardly ever completely neutral as they contain hints of colours in them that are not so noticeable on a small-scale colour chart or paint sample. If you are worried about getting the wrong hue in a neutral colour, you can take the safe option of choosing the lightest hint of the main colour in a mono-chromatic colour scheme, perhaps the same colour used for the doors.
If you want to be slightly more creative you can create a cool look by adding hints of silver to the wood, by using Feng Shui Silver Haze, which will provide a subtle silver shimmer. This works well with purple and blue hues. If this is combined with silver accessories in the room, and everything else is in order, a contemporary haven could be the result.
It would be equally acceptable to make use of the look of the grained wood by using a stain varnish through which you can see the grain. This comes in a variety of natural wood colours each of which gives a different impression. A dark oak colour may suit a traditional look, whereas a beech colour is more appropriate for a modern look. Mahogany is a very common wood with a reddish look to it. This can bring warmth to a room. At the end of the day it is all down to the style of house that you are trying to achieve.
If you are trying to achieve a natural wood feel, use wax paste such as Liberon Black Bison Wax, which is available in a range of colours.
