Take another look at the colour wheel and consider colours that are directly opposite each other, such as blue and orange.

These contrast, intensify and enhance each other so it is important that you approach this scheme with caution. You must get the proportions right, as some colours have a greater value and therefore give a stronger impression than their complementary colour.
For example, green and red have equal visual value, and so you can coordinate your surroundings so that you have an equal amount of the two colours in sight. However orange, which is opposite blue, has a greater value to the eye than blue, and so a recommended proportion of blue:orange in sight is 5:3. Yellow, which complements purple, is of a much greater visual value, and so a ratio of 6 purple to 1 yellow is recommended.**These proportions were recommended by the famous 20th century artist Johannes Iten.
