General Preparation

Make sure you have firmly decided what colours and materials you are going to use before you start. You dont want to get half-way through the work and then realise that you are not completely happy with your original rushed choices.

Ensure that everything is in place to get started with. You want the surfaces that you are painting to be as easily accessible as possible and you dont want to risk getting paint on anything else, so try to remove anything that may get in the way. This includes, furniture, ceiling roses, electrical fascias and door handles. (Remember to keep the handle in the room so you dont accidentally get locked inside!)

Lay dust sheets on the floor and on any unremoved furniture to protect from any spillages, and apply Masking Tape to any areas that you dont want the paint to get to. Ensure that the right type of masking tape is used for the job. If the tape is gong to be left for longer than 24 hours, use a uv resistant grade tape, which can be left for up to 14 days such as Pro Mask Blue. If you are applying the tape on delicate surfaces, then use Kleenedge Low Tack Tape, to avoid the paint from peeling from the surface. Remember to use a wide-width masking tape around the edges of the carpet to make sure that paint doesnt seep onto the carpet fibres.

If you are worried about getting your clothes dirty you can wear a protective white cotton boiler suit or a bib and brace. It is advisable to wear cotton rather than wool or any other loose-fibre material to avoid fibres from shedding and adhering to wet paint. If you are using paint with a strong odour, such as an oil eggshell, ensure that the room is well ventilated. You can also use a mask.
