How to Install

This guide is designed to help you install cornice, and should not be taken as strict advice. Designer Colours cannot be liable for any result of using this guide.

Tools/Materials Required
Measuring

Measure the total perimiter of where you want the cornice to go. Add 10% to allow for wastage when cutting, and divide this amount by 2.4 metres (8 feet).

This is the approximate number of lengths of cornice that you will need. For large design repeats you may need to allow for more wastage in order to match the design repeat correctly between two pieces.

Preparation

Ensure that the wall and ceiling are clean, dry and degreased. Make sure that any cracks are filled and that the surface is made as flat as possible. Do not put up the mouldings over wallpaper - cut out the section of wallpaper first.

It may help to hold one length of cornice in situ to help you understand how it will be installed.

Cutting (N.B. Corners do not need to be mitred when using matching corners)

Cut the mouldings using a fine-toothed saw.

The following mitring guide is only an example of mitring when using the Artline Decor Large Adjustable Mitre Box (MB1). Other mitre boxes may vary.

To take cornice round internal (regular) 90 degree corners, you will need a piece left of the corner and a piece right of the corner. To create the left piece, place the length of cornice into the mitre box, face up, with the surface that will stick to the wall flat against the base of the mitre box. Then cut downwards from the right slot of the mitre box, saving the piece to be installed to the left of the cut. Discard the piece on the right.

You may need to create external corners. In this instance, for the left piece, place in mitre box as above, and cut from the left slot, saving the piece to the left of the cut. For the right piece, cut from the right slot, saving the piece to the right of the cut.

To create the right piece, place the length of cornice in the mitre box in the same way as before, but this time cut downwards from the left slot and save the piece to the right of the cut.

Do your best to match one length to the next if there is a design repeat.

Installation

Use a caulking gun with Artline Decor Coving Adhesive and Gap Filler. Apply the adhesive onto the piece of cornice both where it will meet the ceiling and where it will meet the wall. Now simply position the cornice against the surface, and stick. With the hammer, countersink nails right into the moulding for support. (You can disguise them later with filler.) Wipe off excess adhesive immediately after fixing the moulding.

After installing the first length, apply adhesive to the open end and stick the next length to it. Continue in this way, making sure excess adhesive is wiped off.

For very large designs (such as Naldo, Leola or Agnola), you may want to countersink screws through the moulding.

Finishing

Use Artline Decor Coving Adhesive & Gap Filler to disguise any joints or nail holes, wipe down with a sponge, and then paint over with any conventional paint.
