There remains interest among specific designers and consumers in faithfully reproducing colours from yesteryear. Thankfully many historical societies have significant records including actual shavings of those colours adorning the walls of castles and stately homes and the canvas of paintings from our past. The pigments available in the past were mostly of earth origin and generally more muted and more limited than the natural and synthetic pigments available today.
